Current Initiatives ribbon Step It Up for Adolescent Literacy

The goal of CDL’s Step It Up for Adolescent Literacy (Step It Up) is to increase reading skills of students in grades 4 – 12.Key outcomes are:

  • increased teacher response to students’ individual reading skill profiles
  • improved reading accuracy and fluency for students grades 4 – 12
  • increased vocabulary development for students in grades 4-12
  • improved reading comprehension for students in grades 4 – 12
Target Group
Step It Up provides targeted intervention to students in grades 4 – 12 who require additional assistance to become successful readers.

Learning Objectives
Step It Up improves student reading performance by building teachers’ capacity to provide effective, targeted instruction and helping teachers to effectively implement targeted interventions for students experiencing reading difficulties. By teaching teachers, Step It Up impacts hundreds of students each year. Teachers gain knowledge gleaned from scientifically-based reading research including core knowledge about how students learn to read, how to effectively use reading assessment and screening instruments to determine appropriate teaching strategies, and specific instructional strategies, both for progressive skill development and remediation.

Content & Activities

An initial needs assessment is conducted to determine students’ reading accuracy and fluency levels, vocabulary development, and comprehension skills. Students in participating schools are periodically assessed to monitor their progress.Teachers and principals gain in-depth, scientific research based instruction on core knowledge for teaching reading:
  • using assessment to drive reading intervention
  • instructional strategies for both progressive reading skill development and remediation in three main areas: accuracy and fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

School-based support is provided on topics such as schedule design for blocks of intensive intervention, setting-up a data system, and effective program management and delivery.

Initiative Specifics

Step It Up is a 12-month initiative. Educators attend a 4- day institute that is content-focused and highly interactive, combining lecture, demonstrations and collaborative learning. Follow-up and support services are provided at individual school sites and include a comprehensive needs assessment, student assessments, data analysis, grouping of students, mentoring, coaching, modeling of lessons, and facilitation of study/problem-solving groups.

Initiative Staff

Step It Up for Adolescent Literacy is implemented by a cadre of specialists including highly-qualified reading and literacy specialists, psychologists and national experts.

Customize for Your School

CDL will customize this initiative to fit the unique needs of your school.  For example, the 4-day institute may be reduced to 2 days, with the remaining portion of the institute content delivered in 4 quarterly 3-hour sessions.  Additionally, university graduate credit can be arranged through a local university.
