Learning Objectives
Step It Up improves student reading performance by building teachers’ capacity
to provide effective, targeted instruction and helping teachers
to effectively implement targeted interventions for students experiencing
reading difficulties. By teaching teachers, Step It Up impacts
hundreds of students each year. Teachers gain knowledge gleaned
from scientifically-based reading research including core knowledge
about how students learn to read, how to effectively use reading
assessment and screening instruments to determine appropriate teaching
strategies, and specific instructional strategies, both for progressive
skill development and remediation.
Content & Activities
An initial needs assessment is conducted to determine students’ reading
accuracy and fluency levels, vocabulary development, and comprehension
skills. Students in participating schools are periodically assessed
to monitor their progress.Teachers and principals gain in-depth,
scientific research based instruction on core knowledge for teaching
reading:
- using assessment to drive reading intervention
- instructional strategies for both progressive reading skill development and remediation in three main areas: accuracy and fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
School-based support is provided on topics such as schedule design for blocks of intensive intervention, setting-up a data system, and effective program management and delivery.
